What's wrong with my gerbil?

My almost 3 year old gerbil has been acting very sick lately. Today I collected a string of poop from his cage which was connected with a black coating. What could this be? Other symptoms include: fatigue, lethargy, inability to completely open eyes, redness on top teeth.
