Baby shower etiquette?

My mom just had her baby shower yesterday. The hostess of the shower requested that the guests buy more practical gifts than clothing items, yet every guest brought an outfit for the baby. I thought this was kind of disappointing because now my mom has to buy all the practical stuff and can't have fun buying the cute clothes because she's on a limited income. Was this improper etiquette on the guest's part, or am I just being unreasonable? Keep in mind that my mom appreciates the gifts but would have preferred more practical ones, and she thanked everyone graciously. I'm just asking this because I'm curious.
