I need to know the meanings of a few gems?

See, I'm getting a VERY *cough* 'friend' a special gem for Christmas, but I want to find the PERFECT one, so I want to know the 'spiritual' meaning of a cat's eye pendant, an emerald, a ruby, a sapphire, and an opal. Think you can help...? All input is appriciated!! Thanks!
