What is the point of "yanking your chain" humor where the purpose is to annoy or upset someone?

Keep handling the way that you have been (ignoring them or roll your eyes) and they will eventually shut up and leave you alone. If they don't have a welcoming response, they are disarmed and they have to go find an audience somewhere else.
